Cut/Shape

Cut refers to two criteria. The overall shape of a diamond/gemstone and the mathematical proportions of the multifaceted stone.  Diamonds/gemstones are often cut into numerous exotic shapes as set forth below:

Diamond Cuts

Diamond/gemstone cutting requires the meticulous actions of a skilled craftsman.  Certified Diamonds & Gemstones, Inc. solely provides:  Ideal Cut, Excellent Cut and Very Good Cut diamonds/gemstones that reflect nearly all the surrounding and entering light, thereby revealing exceptional fire and brilliance.  Remaining Cut classifications are Good, Fair and Poor.  Only by cutting and fashioning a diamond's/gemstone's numerous facets final shape to precise mathematical proportions, can the beauty and fire locked within the stone be revealed.

Color

Colorless Diamonds

It is the absence of the appearance of color that represents the highest color grade for colorless diamonds; exceptions of course include the brilliant hues of natural colored fancy diamonds. Completely colorless diamonds are rare and most, although they appear colorless, have a slight tinge of color that is discernible only under magnification and proper lighting conditions Grades of colorless diamonds range from D – Z, with D being the highest grade. Grades E – F are also viewed as colorless, while grades G, H, I and J are near colorless. Colorless grades K. L. and M have mildly discernible hints of color and as the scale approaches P subtle variations in tone and hue are present.

Beautiful exceptions to the above referenced Grading Scale are the exotic: blue, pink, green, orange and canary yellow hues of colored fancy, certified natural color origin, unenhanced diamonds from Certified Diamonds & Gemstones, Inc.  For every million carats of diamonds mined, approximately one carat of that total will be a colored fancy diamond.  The rare and exotic blue, pink, green, orange and canary yellow colored fancy diamond hues are all derived from that one in a million carats.

Clarity

Clarity is the extent to which a diamond is devoid of inclusions.  A diamond is said to be flawless if no inclusion or blemish is visible under 10x magnification.  Inclusions are the equivalent of a diamond’s fingerprints.  Fewer inclusions enhance the passage of light through a stone and make a diamond rarer.  The internationally recognized gemological clarity grading scale is set forth below:

CLARITY GRADING SCALES

FL
FLAWLESS
describes diamonds in which a gemologist under favorable lighting conditions, cannot see any inclusions at ten power magnification
IF
INTERNALLY FLAWLESS
describes diamonds which have no internal characteristics observable under the the same conditions as (FL), but which have minor surface blemishes that do not penetrate the stone.
VVS1
VERY, VERY SLIGHTLY INCLUDED
describes diamonds that have very, very small inclusions which are difficult for a gemologist to see at 10x magnification.
VVS2
VS1
VERY SLIGHTLY INCLUDED
describes stones with very small inclusions which can be difficult to observe with 10x magnification. Inclusions are barely visible to the unaided eye, except on some larger stones or large Emerald Cuts.
VS2
SI1
SLIGHTLY INCLUDED
describes stones with small inclusions which are usually obvious when viewed with 10x magnification. Inclusions are difficult to see with the unaided eye, except on larger stones or occasionally with Emerald Cuts.
SI2
SI3
I1
IMPERFECT or PIQUE
describes stones with medium to large inclusions (Piques) which are usually obvious to a gemologist with the unaided eye.  An I1 may have inclusions barely visible or located to the side while an I2 will have numerous inclusions that may be centerally located.
I2
I3

Clarity of SI-1 or greater appears flawless to the naked eye (VS-2 for emerald, princess and radiant shapes).  The presence of inclusions that are visible to the naked eye result in a clarity grade of SI-2 or SI-1.  Accurate clarity grading can only occur with a loose unmounted diamond, as it is relatively easy to set an I-1 stone to disguise inclusions to make the diamond appear to be a better clarity grade.

Carat

A gemologist’s measure of diamond/gemstone weight is expressed in carats.  A single carat is divided into 100 points.  Therefore a 75-point diamond/gemstone is the equivalent of a 3/4 – carat..  As the carat size of a given quality of diamond increases, so does its rarity and the per carat acquisition cost.  The internationally recognized gemological carat scale is set forth below:

Carat Weight

A diamond/gemstone’s size is only significant when considered with cut, color, clarity, certification and the client’s confidence that the merchandise is beyond reproach.  The rarity and lack of rough material for larger diamonds/gemstones directly increases the per carat acquisition cost.
